In this day of spontaneous imagery by anyone through a smart phone it is easy to wonder in what way that artists are still an important thread in the fabric of society…..?
The answer remains, as it always has been, that those who devote their days and lives to creating are a committed mirror of what goes on around us.
Yes, most people currently through selfies and food posts, are obviously doing this as well. Then what makes the artist different?
I’d say the courage and tenacity to actually reflect the people and the things that the general public does, with a skill that takes continual self reflection and background beyond picking up a smart phone.
The artist creates a visual language ideally unique to their own DNA and not a generic mass production. Within the crowd yet separate from it.
The artist can use technology as part of their palette, but what they make out of it goes far beyond the digital age.
So, the why for art remains as long as the human race does; as a true indicator and mirror of the times we live in.
